These amazing birds spend many many months just floating around the oceans rafting in very large groups. As they then start to return the high cliffs and often back to previous years burrows for the mating season for in early spring time. Puffins mate for life and the early returning ones are able to get their favorite nesting places.
You can and I do spend many many hours just watching these amazing and funny birds.
You can easily get mesmerized either watching them coming back into land in windy conditions with hopefully a beak full of sand eels or just happily wandering around being their mischievous antics.
In July as the young ones start to appear called Pufflings they become much more active on their fishing trips. The threat is always present from Gulls and Skuas searching for vulnerable ones. If you very lucky and they approach and start to call you will hear their wonderful chatter.
